Die richtige Trense zu finden, ist gar nicht so leicht.

What you should consider when buying a bridle

You want to buy a new bridle for your horse or you're in the process of buying your very first bridle ever, but you have no idea what you should consider? No problem! We have dealt with this question and summarized the most important information for you here.

Saddle and bridle are the equipment we use on a daily basis when working with our horses. It is natural that it should be perfectly tailored to our horses and their needs.  To find the right saddle, most riders already invest a lot of time, educate themselves on the subject, and seek advice, for example, from their trusted saddler. For the right bridle, enough time is just as important in the selection process.

Tipp: When buying your bridle, don't just focus on the price, but trust your instincts and knowledge. Because buying cheap often means buying twice.

How do I find the right noseband?

But where can you find the right noseband for your own horse among the wide range of different options? After all, there are numerous nosebands that have different effects on our horses. There are, for example, the Swedish, English, Hanoverian, or Mexican nosebands, and many more. It is best to start by informing yourself about the different types of nosebands. In this article, we have already summarized the most important information for you, so feel free to take a look before continuing to read. Finding the ideal noseband is not always easy. Simply researching may not necessarily lead you to the optimal choice for you and your horse.
It helps to ask yourself:

  • 'Which bridle is my horse currently wearing?'
  • 'Does it seem content when ridden with it?'
  • 'What could I improve?'
  • 'Where do I want to go as a rider?' because some bridles, for example, are not allowed in competitions (all our bridles are compliant with FN guidelines for competitions)

If you're still unsure, feel free to visit our bridle finder. Here, we provide individual advice and help you find the optimal noseband.

Tipp: If possible, test various nosebands over a slightly longer period, for example, from your barn friends, and pay attention to how your horse reacts.

Once you have clarified all of this, it is important to determine which specific characteristics are important to you in your new bridle. Especially what is important to you visually as well as functionally. Here are some characteristics that are of particular importance to us:

Functionality

  • Perfect fit and anatomical shape
  • Good padding
  • Removable flash noseband
  • Soft, durable leather
  • Quick-change browband
  • Buckle type (buckle on the crownpiece or on the sides)
  • Vegetable-tanned leather
  • Crownpiece shape (with or without relief for the neck)

If the functional characteristics are right, you can also focus on visual preferences. Nowadays, you don't necessarily have to sacrifice one for the other.

Appearance

  • 'Do I want white stitching?'
  • 'What color should my browband be?'
  • 'Do I want a round-stitched or flat-stitched bridle?'
  • 'Do I want a brown or black bridle?'
  • 'Are colorful fittings on the bridle important to me?'

What size is right for my horse?

Now you just have to find the right size. For this, it is best to measure your horse's head and compare it with a size chart.
